Es Pontàs is a natural arch of limestone, around 20 meters tall, that rises from the sea between Cala Santanyí and Cala Llombards. The name means 'the big bridge' in Catalan, which describes well what you see: a massive rock arch with a hole in the middle through which the sun shines exactly in spring and autumn.
The Mirador you reach by car from Cala Santanyí. Park at the end of the street Sa Cova des Vell Marí (free parking), then walk around 3 minutes along the signposted cliff path. Safe and without a drop edge (doable with kids and older parents too). You then stand on a rock, the cliff path to the left continuing toward Cala Llombards, the arch in the middle.
The magic hour here is actually sunrise, because the sun rises behind it and the arch gives the silhouette. At sunset it is also beautiful but counter-lit. If you want the photo, be there half an hour before sunrise, then you have space. From 10 in the morning tour groups arrive.
Climbing: Es Pontàs is a famous deep water solo route, Chris Sharma made the first ascent of the 9a+ route 'Es Pontàs' in 2006, at the time the hardest deep water solo in the world. If you come in summer, you sometimes see climbers from boats trying the arch. Without a boat the arch is not reachable (or by swimming, but with current).
