Es Baluard sits in the Sant Pere bastion at the western edge of Palma's old city wall — a sixteenth-century fortification that the city's architects in 2003 wrapped in concrete and turned into a museum. The building works because it doesn't pretend the wall isn't there. You walk through it. The collection runs from late nineteenth-century Mallorcan painters like Mir, Rusiñol and Cerdà through Miró and Picasso to contemporary names like Rebecca Horn and Christian Boltanski. Roughly 700 works in total. The terrace on top is the reason most locals come back. It looks straight across the bay to the cathedral and Bellver Castle. Free admission Wednesdays after 15:00. Closed Mondays. Ninety minutes for the collection, longer if the light is good.
